How Do I hook up my home entertainment system? - hd vcrs excellent technical and content coverage

I have a home theater receiver, 5.1 surround speakers, two VCRs, a DVD recorder, satellite receiver Direct TV / DVR combo, flat screen TV and DVD player.

My system is not in HD. They are of better quality, such as DVI and HDMI cables really better? Thank you!
